The bloodline

Every Karma breeding begins with the dogs — and every one of those dogs begins with Mika.

For more than 35 years, our Portuguese Water Dogs have been thoughtfully bred with an unwavering commitment to health, temperament, structure, type and preservation of the breed.

What follows is that line in order, from the dog who started it to the dogs carrying it now. Names in the pedigrees marked CH are Champions; GCH is Grand Champion.

Mika came into our lives on 2 November 2007, and since then nothing has been the same. She is not only our beloved dog but my best friend and trusted Registered Service Dog. Mika, which means “gift from God” in Hebrew, was named by my son Mason — and she truly is.

At just six months she earned her Canine Good Citizen from the American Kennel Club, and at sixteen months her certification from Delta Pet Partners as a Therapy Dog. I began showing her as an owner-handler across New England, where she earned many ribbons including our very first Best of Breed. She was finished by PH. Rick Krieger and awarded Champion status with three straight Majors in under two months. In the summer of 2009 we competed at the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America’s National Specialty at Rend Lake, Illinois, where she earned her Rally Novice title.

Her most remarkable work has been with children, as a Reading Rover companion listening patiently to stories, and in nursing homes, where she and I served as a Pet Partner team with Rhode Island Home & Hospice.

Mika was AKC’s number two ranked PWD in Rhode Island, and Anat’s first AKC Champion. Her story and Anat’s are the same story →

Seal is Mika’s daughter, and the point where the Karma line becomes Karma’s own. Born 28 April 2011, she was number seven of ten healthy puppies — an absolute sweetheart with a great deal of attitude and drive.

At eleven months old she won her first Best of Breed, rising out of the puppy class to defeat a Special — a dog that had already achieved Champion status. Less than two months later she finished her Championship at the tender age of eighteen months, and went on to be awarded Grand Champion. She was once AKC’s number one ranked PWD in Rhode Island, ranked third for Best of Opposite Sex in the 2012 Top Ten conformation standings, and is a CGC and service dog.
